§ 6.130. Signs and outdoor advertising.

  • Regulations for the use of signs, billboards, and other outdoor advertising structures are as follows:

    6.131 General provisions. In all districts, the following shall apply:

    a.

    No sign shall be erected or maintained where by reason of its position, wording, illumination, size, shape, or color it may obstruct, impair, obscure, interfere with the view of, or be confused with any authorized traffic control sign, signal, or device.

    b.

    For parking areas, entrance and exit signs not exceeding two (2) square feet in area and not more than thirty (30) inches in height are permitted.

    c.

    Nonilluminated "For Sale" or "For Rent" signs not exceeding four (4) square feet in area provided they are not located on a public right-of-way are permitted.

    d.

    One (1) sign not more than twenty-four (24) square feet in area giving the names of contractors, engineers or architects during construction of a building or development are permitted.

    e.

    Signs established by or by order of any governmental agency are permitted.

    f.

    Political campaign signs and posters are permitted on private property with permission of owner and limited in size to four (4) square feet.

    g.

    For special events of public interest, one (1) sign not over twenty-four (24) square feet in area located upon the site of the event for the duration of the event and for not more than two (2) weeks prior to the event are permitted.

    h.

    With the exception of mailboxes attached to a post and traffic control signs, signals or devices, no signs or posters are permitted on any public right-of-way or utility pole.

    i.

    Flashing or intermittent illumination is prohibited.

    j.

    Billboards and similar advertising structures are prohibited.

    k.

    Off site signs are prohibited.

    6.132 Regulations for all Residential, Professional and Special Districts.

    a.

    Signs not exceeding twelve (12) square feet for customary home occupations are permitted.

    b.

    For apartment buildings and other multi-family residences, identification signs not exceeding twelve (12) square feet are permitted.

    c.

    For public recreation uses, community facilities, churches, hospitals and funeral homes, bulletin boards or identification signs not exceeding twenty-four (24) square feet are permitted.

    d.

    Flashing or intermittent illumination is prohibited.

    6.133 Regulations for on-site signs in the C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, M-1 and M-2 Districts.

    a.

    No signs in these districts shall be located within five (5) feet of a public right-of-way.

    b.

    No ground sign shall be erected to exceed twenty (20) feet above ground level and contain more than one hundred fifty (150) square feet in area. The bottom coping of every ground sign shall be at least five (5) feet above the ground or street level.
